I had the unexpected blessing of being able to fly to Honolulu Hawaii for a 24 hour layover. We actually got cancelled while we were there, and we got an extra 5 hours there, and then had one less flight on the way home. All-in-all, quite an adventure. Here are some pictures from the adventure.
Cheryl and Damia were going to hike to Diamond Head, so they invited me to go along with them.
The path was steep and curvy, as you can tell by the pathways . . .
The first glimpse of the ocean from near the top.
Oh, and did I mention the stairs???
But the view at the top was incredible, and SOOO worth it.
Climbing out of the bunker tunnel.
This lighthouse still works every night!
Panorama of the back side. Click on the picture to make it bigger.
You can almost see the full outline of the "crater", the top of the volcano, from here. It was pretty big!
Lo and behold, a rainbow appeared! Right between their heads!
No, those aren't birds. They're little tiny surfers. . .and lots of them!
The history of the lighthouse
A map of the hardest climb, the stairs.
Papaya anyone?
Just catching the last of the sunset back down on lighthouse level.
I love the combination of the moon, clouds, mountain, and fountain in this pic!
HNL at night
The blue sky and water the next morning
Snorkeling . . .
. . .and no mask necessary! This was taken right off the pier. The 2nd fish in this picture is the "humuhumunukunukuapua'a", the Hawaiian fish! I learned all about it from a cartoon that I watched with my nieces. . .and then I saw a real one!!
